Strategic thinking or design thinking?

I have been asking myself this question for a while now... ‘Where do strategy and design come together?’

 

I want to share with you my understanding of this to date.

Strategic thinking answers the questions: where are we heading? How are we competing in the market space / place? How do we differ from our competitors?

 

Up to now strategies were frozen in the business plans of companies and securely locked in the safe for the fear that someone (employees included) may steal them.

 

This served well organisations operating in a static word (industrial) where change was the exception.

 

Yet today change has become a daily challenge for many organisations, therefore the need to integrate strategic thinking with design thinking.

 

Design thinking is naturally emerging as a democratic and open tool available to anyone in the company (it’s impossible to lock the creativity of employees) to innovate.

 

Opposite to strategic thinking, design thinking is a bottom up progress and relays on the creativity of the people working in an organisation, no matter at what level.

 

People then, largely ignored from business and economic theories, are, and have always been the engine of innovation and growth.

 

Integrating design thinking characterised by a (bottom up and operational nature) with your strategic thinking process (top-down) will help your organisation to continuously maintain a suitable advantage.

How many A(s) have you got?

Today in Ireland more than 60,000 early teens receive their Junior Certificate results.

 

What do you think parents, families and friends wish for? Lots of A(s).

 

In our schooling system an A certifies students’ compliancy, and their ability of remembering specific pieces of information.

 

But yet, in a world cluttered with information which is available at our fingertips the ability of discerning and filtering it it’s more important of the information itself.

 

Don’t get me wrong, a general understanding on how the world works is essential, and I believe there is plenty room for improvement (for adults too).

 

I believe though, that supporting and enhancing the new generation to develop their ability to learn (not only in school) but from life and discovering their passions and (how to freely experss it) would add much more value to both their lives and to the rest of society.

 

I hope more educators were open to this idea, even if I know that it sounds scary.
