The power of rejection

It’s easy to say ''it’s OK for me to know that I can’t please everyone''.


Facing rejection though (in real life) is tough.


The project you really desired, the job you dreamed, the initiative you wanted to make a difference... No, sorry, you are out!


When trying hard to make a difference and challenging the status quo, be ready... you will face rejection.


Rejection though plays an important role in our lives; it allows us to discover more about ourselves.


After overcoming the initial grief, taking time to look back at how we didn’t fit (not from the point of view of the decision maker that didn’t pick us) but from our point of view, will release tremendous energy.


Switching perspective really helps.

Now it’s your call; you can bring rejection on a personal level and freeze. Or, you can embrace rejections, learn from them, and may be start your own project or initiative that better defines who you are.

What is your new system?

Many teams in start-ups believe they must answerer this question: ''what does our customer want?''


In so doing they build products and services enabling their customers to satisfy a want. Despite focusing on their customer first (which is great) they quickly shift to improve existing solutions.


What if more start-ups ask themselves this question instead: what’s the job our customers want to be done? And how could we make it easier/convenient for them to do it?


This question helps start-ups to move away from current existing solutions of the problem and focuses more on the job the customer is trying to get done.


Design turns into design thinking when teams stop developing better, cheaper or faster versions of an already conceived solution, but rather try new solutions.

Design (thinking) helps start-ups to think about a new system, rather than improving an existing one.

On being wrong

No one I know likes to be wrong.


In a perfect world, one with no change, being wrong is our fault. The right answer lies in front of us, but we didn’t care enough to grasp it.


As we all know, our world is not perfect, and most of all is not static.


In creating new solutions (products, services, etc.) you better not trying to find clues confirming you are right about it, rather look for evidence showing you are wrong.


The other day I was invited by a friend to meet a guy with an idea. As he started talking I realised that the challenge wasn’t the idea, rather it was the guy. He tried to demonstrate to (himself and to others) of being right… all the time.

Perfect Idea


The biggest impediment to change and innovation is hardly the lack of ideas but rather our presumption that we have found the perfect one.

Design thinking in start-ups

shapes their strategy.


While in large and established organisations the gap between their overall strategy and the design process is quite wide, in start-ups one is the direct consequence of the other.


Design links the creativity of the founder and (his/her team) with the unspoken needs present in the marketplace.

The design thinking process then helps teams to innovate, which means finding creative new ways to meet those needs, test and validate them.


Design then links creativity (a human trait) with the innovation effort (team work) which is the unfolding strategy of start-ups.
